Your pet is considered a senior as early as 6 years of age. Pets age much faster than we do so as odd as that sounds, it’s true. Large breeds tend to age at an even faster rate than smaller breeds and cats do. We recommend a geriatric profile starting around that age that includes a complete comprehensive blood workup, a complete urinalysis, and in some cases, a chest x-ray. This gives the doctors a baseline to work from should problems later develop. Certain breeds are predisposed to specific health concerns. Those patients should be monitored regularly, to catch and hopefully treat or prevent further complications.
